耀变 Yao Bian Jian Zhan - Yohen Tenmoku 天目?

World’s most precious tea bowls, why is this piece of Chinese ceramic is designed as the Japanese national treasure?

There are a lot of potteries as well as pottery makers and producing centers in Japan. Some are dealt with at a high price as art objects. However, only 14 items (out of 1,110 items in all categories) are designated as national treasure.Among such a small number of potteries designated as national treasure, there is a type of pottery which ALL existing items are designated as national treasure.

The type of pottery is called “Yohen Tenmoku - Yao Bian” tea bowls.

Only three tea bowls of this kind are existing in the world! And all of the three are in Japan.

Each Yao Bian Tenmoku is in Kyoto, Osaka and Tokyo; there is no other place where Yao Bian Tenmoku exists. A Yao Bian Tenmoku is priced for 168,000 JPY (approx. $1,530) in 1918, which is equivalent to current monetary value of 1,700,000,000 JPY (approx. $15.5 millions)!

What is Yao Bian Tenmoku Tea Bowls?

Actually, Yao Bian Tenmoku tea bowls are not made in Japan.
It was made in Jian Yang, Fu Jian in China in 800-900 years ago. The bowls are only made in Jian Yang region where had been a biggest producing center of tea bowls.

In the early Song dynasty, Chinese tea was not only for drinking but also a popular competitive activity. The tea leaf was ground into powder and whisked in the tea bowl - Jian Zhan. A Japanese Buddhist priest went back to Japan after the study of Buddhism in a temple that was in a mountain called "天目山 - TianMu 'Tenmo' Mountain." He introduced powdered tea and Jian ware, which he brought back from China, and show the way to drink to Japanese people. When people asked, what's the name of this fascinating teaware? He smiled and said: "Tenmoku" ...
